Aldi Live G Free: the Good, the Bad, and the "Meh"

Raise your hand if you’ve ever felt personally victimized by the prices of most gluten free food.

If you follow a gluten free diet, you know what I mean. My weekly treat at the local sandwich shop will always cost two dollars more than the sandwiches my stomach-of-steel friends’ get, and any urge to bake comes to a screeching halt when I find myself face to face with the price tag on the gluten free cake and cookie mixes.

However, as more and more people are discovering a gluten intolerance (or just hopping on a ‘fad’ diet), private label brands are starting to catch on. No one wants to pay a crazy extra amount for their snacks just because their stomach can’t handle wheat. Private labels are starting to notice this gap in the market and are taking advantage of the opportunity by developing products devoted to creating affordable options for the allergy-prone. One of the first big companies to take this step was Aldi with their Live G Free product line. Each product in the line is gluten free certified, and many offer copy-cat versions of products I buy regularly. Bless the Aldi gods.

But, as anyone who has ever experimented with gluten free foods knows, the taste, texture, and ingredients of these products can be hit or miss. When removing gluten from foods that depend on ingredients like wheat, barley, and rye as their base, those ingredients need to be supplemented. And many attempts to make certain food, like bread or pasta, free of gluten can be, shall we say, ambitious.

I recruited some fellow glutards to help me test out a few of Aldi’s most intriguing options from their Live G Free product line to investigate if these products are worth replacing my ride-or-die options to help us all save some cash.

The Good

Live G Free Gluten Free Pretzel Sticks vs. Snyder’s of Hanover

Gluten free pretzels are the one GF product that’s better than the real deal. Don’t believe me? Here’s why. The Live G Free Gluten Free Pretzel Sticks were denser than the Snyder’s, while still producing the classic GF pretzel crunch that we all know and love. Most reviewers preferred the denser texture of Aldi’s version, and with a price difference of over a dollar the decision to switch was a no brainer.

The Bad

Live G Free Gluten Free Whole Grain Bread vs. Udi’s Multigrain Sandwich Bread

The gluten free bread was the one product from the line that received a big thumbs down from reviewers. Gluten free bread is hard to get right. Udi’s Multigrain Sandwich Bread was much thicker and satisfying than Aldi’s version, which, once toasted, tasted more like a cracker than bread.

The “Meh”

Live G Free Gluten Free Fully Cooked Chicken Nuggets vs. Purdue Simply Smart

This product divided our testers. All reviewers could definitely tell a difference between the two chicken nuggets, but the group couldn’t come to an agreement about which was better. The Purdue chicken nuggets were bigger with thicker breading, but many reviewers preferred the taste of Aldi’s.
