Ore-Ida vs. Kroger vs. Red Robin- Is it FRYday yet??

Shout out to our awesome follower on Instagram for requesting we do a fry review.  We LOVE us some fry nights, so thanks for giving us the perfect excuse to gorge ourselves, ehem, sample.  We think for a classic steak fry taste, you will prefer the Ore-Ida fries overall.  Kroger scored 75% in similarity.  While Red Robin fries were tasty, that's due in large part to A LOT of additional ingredients we can barely pronounce.

We decided to heat these babies up on the same pan on the same rack of the oven, to keep the variables as constant as possible.  After all, the science of fry making is no laughing matter.  We think flavor, texture, and look wise, these fries are all based on preference.  If you like a classic fry that lets the potato be the star in both flavor and thick texture, you will likely prefer the Ore-Ida fries.  If you prefer the taste of a salty seasoning mix as well as a soft inner texture, you will like Red Robin's steak fries.  If you are into the grease that is a French fry (guilty!) and a soft inner texture, Kroger fries are for you.  

All fries did a nice job of just crisping up a little on the outside.  Kroger had the prettiest golden color, but this is likely due to the addition of an extra food dye in their ingredients.  We are not pro adding unnecessary ingredients, and you ought to consider your stance on additional ingredients when making your purchase.  Red Robin (the most expensive fry at $3.69/bag) has ELEVEN additional ingredients to that of Ore-Ida.  You may be saying, "Sure, but those ingredients are for the seasoning that comes on the fries."  That is not entirely the case.  The creators of this fry have added several ingredients to alter the texture and potato flavor.  If you are all about the final taste, then you will like this, but we would not call the potato the star of this fry.  The Kroger and Ore-Ida ingredient panels are 90% similar.  Both have a short ingredient list that most consumers would be familiar with.  We've never met a fry we don't like, so we recommend you choose based on preferences.
