Neutrogena Oil-Free Cleansing Wipes vs. Equate Pink Grapefruit Cleansing Towelettes


Earlier this week we tested out Neutrogena Oil-Free Cleansing Wipes and compared them to the Up&Up version. The Up&Up scored a 74% on our similarity score, which is a moderately similar product. Today we picked up Walmart’s Equate brand version: Equate beauty Pink Grapefruit Cleansing Towelettes.

Face wipe towelettes typically come in two types of packaging: A plastic wrapper with a flap on the front for smaller packages, and a plastic wrap with a hard plastic opening on the front for larger packages. That pattern holds true here, with the larger size equate package utilizing hard plastic, and the smaller Neutrogena with a soft package flap. Both versions allowed relatively easy access to the wipes, though.

The real difference comes in the ingredient formulations, and the difference here is huge. The formulations for Up&Up and Neutrogena had differences, but both were alcohol based with the 2nd ingredient listed being denatured alcohol. Equate, however, is alcohol free, which makes an outright comparison very difficult. As you can see from the table below, there is very little overlap on the ingredient formulations between the two products (common ingredients are highlighted in green):


In spite of the different ingredient formulations, our consumers found using the products to be fairly similar. Both products had a similar smell, with a slight preference for Neutrogena. Our consumer testers also noted that there was more solution on the Neutrogena wipes and that they were wetter. Roughly 2/3s of our testers would purchase the name brand, but still indicated that the store brand was a quality product.


Overall Similarity Score: 66%.  We weight ingredient composition heavily when calculating similarity scores, and as such this product scores low. But in this case, Equate is offering an alcohol-free version of the product, and if you are in the market for an alcohol-free wipe, this can be a decent store brand to save some money with.
