Burt's Bees Facial Cleansing Towelettes vs. Equate Facial Cleansing Towelettes

Burt’s Bees is a brand with a passionate fanbase of dedicated users, and if you’re reading this there’s a good chance you’re one of them. In recent years the brand has expanded past its ubiquitous (and fantastic!) lip balm, to include soaps, deodorants, and a whole host of other products capitalizing on the powerful brand equity associated with the Burt’s Bees name. While scoping out some face wipes at Walmart, we were excited to find another one of these products in the form of Burt’s Bees Facial Cleansing Towelettes. Sitting right next to it on the shelf was an Equate Beauty Facial Cleansing Towelettes inviting us to compare it to Burt’s Bees.

The packaging of both used the familiar orangeish-yellow associated with Burt’s Bees. As far as functionality goes, the Equate packaging was actually preferable, with a hard plastic opening as opposed to the soft plastic flap on Burt’s Bees. We’ve found the flap on face wipe packages can start to lose its seal after time, which can lead to the product drying out.

The ingredient panels were nearly identical, with Equate containing all of the ingredients of Burt’s Bees, with two additional ingredients not present in Burt’s Bees: an emulsifier (polyglyceryl-2 dipolyhydroxystearate), and an additional cleansing agent (lauryl glucoside).

Our testers noticed a difference in the smells of the two products, with the edge going to Burt’s Bees. It appears that Equate hasn’t quite gotten the fragrance mix down on this one.

The test results indicated that the products were virtually indistinguishable outside of smell. The feel on the skin, consistency of the towelette, and efficacy were all rated as identical to the name brand.

Overall Similarity Score: 91%. This product scored extremely well, with the difference being in the smell, which may be a dealbreaker for some consumers. However, we feel this is a high-quality product and will do a great job at a cheaper price.
