Drug Store Matte Lipstick: Stay on Trend with these Dupes

Our expert makeup reviewer, Nitya Reddy, is BACK, and responding to YOUR Review Requests. This time, it’s all about the Matte Lip Trend.

A dentist by day, and product junkie by night, Nitya has reviewed both winners and losers for Brandefy. This time, she’s diving into a whole new trend.

Trending: Matte Liquid Lip

While a brown lip and lip liner were all the rage in the 90s and a glossy finish was trending in the early 2000s, today it’s all about a nude, matte finish. Our expectations of a matte lip product include:

  • Non drying

  • Not sticky/ comfortable to wear

  • Long lasting (12hrs of wear without having to reapply)

  • Rich pigmentation with just one swipe

  • Precise application wand

So, it’s no wonder that companies have struggled with coming up with the perfect formulation. Nearly every makeup brand out there boasts a long lasting liquid lip so I put some drug store favorites to the test to see if they could hold up to my personal prestige brand favorites, NARS Powermatte Liquid Lip ($26)and Tarte's Tartiest Quick Dry Matte Lip Paint ($20).

NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream ($6.49) / NYX Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick ($6.99) / NYX Lip Lingerie Liquid Lipstick ($6.99) - NYX offers a variety of different matte lip products. Of the 3 I tested out, I was disappointed with the formulation. They were either not long lasting, sticky or not true matte finishes and did not hold up to the prestige brands.

Maybelline Superstay Matte Ink ($9.49) had great pigmentation and was pleasantly surprised at how long it lasted (12+hrs)! It was a true matte and easy to apply. The only downside was that I found it to be a little sticky but overall a really great drugstore find! Buy Our Pick

Maybelline Color Sensational Vivid Matte Liquid Lip ($7.99) was more of a gloss than a true matte because it had a slight sheen that never fully dried down. Stick with the other Maybelline if you want a true matte.

Loreal Infallible Pro Matte Liquid Lipstick ($9.99) had good pigmentation and true matte but you do have to wait 10 mins for it to completely dry. I found the formula to be a little drying on my lips and the application tip to be flimsy. I would say this is above average for drugstore matte lip but not as good as the Maybelline Superstay or the Sephora Liquid Lipstick.

Ulta Beauty Lip Cream Matte ($9) was not a true matte and never fully dried down. It also had poor pigmentation and took multiple swipes to apply.

Sephora's Cream Lip Stain Liquid Lipstick ($14) most closely resembled the prestige brands. I found it to be the most comfortable to wear with the best pigmentation and very long lasting. I have already swapped Nars for this one! Buy Our Pick
